Pre Birth Baby Clothes For A Boy Or Girl
Much of the excitement of whether a new baby is going to be a boy or a girl has disappeared in recent years, as it has become fashionable to find out the sex of the baby through ultrasound, long before he or she is born. I am very firmly into the "I don't want to know" camp; it is a very exciting time, and there are precious few of those in our lives, so why not make the most of the most special one of all: the birth of a baby.
Some will tamely argue that it is sensible to know the sex of a baby in advance, so that you can buy appropriate clothing suitable for a girl, if she is a girl, or boy, if he is a boy. Well, that may be true to a small extent, but many baby clothes are gender neutral, so it is very easy to clothe a newborn baby without getting locked into the pink or blue divide.
The scope for neutral choices in new born baby clothes is represented by colours and patterns, some of which are gender neutral:
Colours That Are Gender Neutral
If you are buying clothes for an unborn baby, the easiest way is to stick with gender neutral colours when you make your choices. As a culture, we're fond of dressing babies in pastels, but you do not have to limit yourself to pale yellow and baby green to be safe. There are lots of other gender-neutral colours to choose from.
Colour is not just important with baby's clothes, but bedding also. If you are looking for a crib set that is not gender specific, then both white and ivory are very good choices, and you can also get away with eyelet and lace as long as it is not too liberal and delicate. A plump white comforter and matching crib bumpers work just as well for a boy as for a girl.
It is safe to use primary and bright, clear secondary colours as another good way to avoid the gender conflict when you are choosing clothing and accessories for baby. Bright red, blue, green and yellow sleepers will look adorable no matter whether the baby turns out to be a boy or a girl. Choose onesies in turquoise, orange, dark green or red, either all a solid colour, or with contrasting ribbing along the edges, and you are on pretty safe ground..
Also, you could go for the unusual. Imagine the reaction from visitors if you outfit baby's room in tuxedoed penguins sporting bright red, blue and yellow ribbons, or pick up a t-shirt emblazoned with red, yellow and blue balloons. You can even pat yourself on the back for choosing bright colours for the baby's room and accessories. As much as we love pastel baby togs, babies really are more responsive to bright and clear colours.
Gender Neutral Patterns
If you are not surewhether it is going to be a boy or a girl, keep in mind that you can err more easily on the boy side than the girl. A baby girl in a t-shirt printed with sports motifs is cute. On the other hand, you just would not put a little boy in a sleeper printed with tiny sprigs of daisies. Teddy bears and ducks are one gender-neutral choice, but you can find adorable, unique prints that will stand out. Some of the more clever that we've seen around lately - Noah's Ark, lions and tigers, traffic signs, plus seasonal themes such as candy canes, pumpkins, candy corn.
There are other gender neutral patterns that suit both boys or girls clothing, and these include candy colour stripes, odd-size polka dots and abstract patterns. Select a motif, choose a colour, and have a blast dressing your baby in clothes and accessories that don't shout out "boy" or "girl".
