What is the best stain removal method on baby clothes?

What do you use for stains on baby clothes that seem to work the best? Just a spray or soak?
Also, once the clothing has been washed and dried, is it too late to get the stain out?

Put a drop of Dawn dish stuff in 1/4 cup of peroxide and stir.
It even works on old stains. Just put the item in the sink and pour the peroxide mix on it and let it soak for a while.
And it won’t bleach the fabric out.

I have had great luck with using both the spray and powder versions of Oxyclean – though not w/the baby specific kind. I spray the stains and add one scoop of the powder to the wash – I also use all free and clear detergent and a little white vinegar for fabric softener – after washing run 1 extra rinse cycle. If your baby’s clothes are still stained, repeat the process. Do not put stained clothes in the dryer – this just sets the stains in for good. Good luck!

    Hi,

I am the Queen of stain removal!! :) – unfortunately self proclaimed!

Ok, spray and wash for the lighter stains is perfect. Try to get it on the stains as soon as possible. Let it sit for at least an hour prior to washing. They also sell spray and wash ultra for the bad stains.

For the REALLY bad stains – Oxy Duel Power stain treatment. This stuff is like magic. My daughter got some pretty bad stuff on a soft yellow outfit and this stuff brought it back to new. Also, for larger items or various items you can buy Oxy and soak.

For whites, there is a Clorox pen that works wonders. Even clothes that a mostly white but may have other colours – the pen works around the other colours. It is thick and doesn’t run.

Also, Sunlight soap bars work wonders. When I picked up my wedding gown – I brought it home only to find a big black mark on the train…the slightly moistened sunlight bar took the stain out without washing and did not mark the fabric. :)

All the best and much stain free clothes wishes for you!

PS. I am in Canada…but most of these items should be available is most places.

i have gotten out EVERY SINGLE STAIN out. this method works every time! keep a bucket in your utility sink and put in the garment with 1 T oxyclean and fill with hot water. let sit overnight and i guarantee it. i’ve been doing this for 2 years with a 3 year old and 17 month old. the only thing that i’ve found to be stubborn is orange juice, but i still get it out. i buy the big powder box at costco for $15 and it last a good 3 months. this method also takes out OLD-yellowed spit-up from baby clothes. (that’s almost impossible.)

When my daughter was a baby, I would soak her stained clothes in undiluted laundry detergent for several hours before washing. Worked like a charm! For set in stains, I did the same thing, but for about 24 hours. It usually worked prett well then, too.

    1) For berry stains, dunk just the stained part in boiling water, believe it or not. The stain is gone as though it had never been. (I could hardly believe it until I tried it, but it’s true!)

    2) Other stains, I usually soak and then pre-treat according to directions on the label.

    3) If it goes through the dryer, it’s set forever.

    4) Avoid the problem as much as possible. Buy clothes you honestly don’t care that much about (second-hand stores are awesome) and use bibs when the baby is wearing clothes you do care about. I used to have my little ones wear nothing but diapers and a bib when they were in their high chairs to eat–much easier clean up and everyone is happy (if the house is warm enough!).

I have had the most success at removing stains by putting Tide directly onto the stain (inside and out), rolling the rest of the garment around that spot, and then leaving the clothing sit in the hamper or laundry for a few hours or a few days before washing as usual. Then, I examine those pieces of clothing, before moving them to the dryer. If I can still see the stain, I apply more Tide, roll, and put it in another load later. For milk/formula and other stubborn stuff, I sometimes get good results by soaking in Biz overnight. If your baby has sensitive skin or allergies, you can rewash in your preferred detergent after the stain is gone.
If you read the packages on "washable" markers, paints, and such, they actually say NOT to treat with anything, but to just wash with detergent. I had a friend call to complain about stains from washable markers, and she was told that the stain sprays and sticks will set it in. I don’t know if that would be true for baby food, milk, etc., but none of them ever worked very well on my babies’ stains anyway.

After clothing has been dried, it is usually too late to get a stain out. But sometimes lots of soaking in Biz or letting it sit with a paste of Biz and water will still work.

    Good luck.
(No, I don’t know anyone who works for the companies that make those products; that is just what has worked after 10+ years of trial and error.)

I use the Oxi-Clean spray stain remover. It worked on stains that had been left to sit for months. My sister has a son 4 months younger than my stepson, so I had been passing her clothes as my stepson out-grew them… when she gave them back, she didn’t tell me they weren’t clean. Six months later I was organizing and sorting what I wanted to keep for future children and what I could part with, and I discovered spit up and stains on a lot of the clothes… I sprayed them with the OxiClean, let them sit overnight, then washed them in warm water on an extra long wash cycle. If the OxiClean doesn’t work, you can try a spray on stain remover called Zout, I’ve had good luck with that also. If nothing works, if the item is so stained that you won’t use it, try bleaching it in the washer with 1/4 to 1/2 cup of bleach. The bleach may take the stain out. On the other hand, it may completely bleach the item… which is why you only use it if it’s so stained you won’t use it anyway! Good luck!

The best thing to so is wipe up as much of the food as you can and then rinse the stain in cold water. Pretreat the stain with Shout or WISK and then soak it overnight in warm water.

Once you’ve washed and dried the clothing and the stain still shows up, it’s set-in. If the garment is white you can pretreat it multiple times and use chlorine bleach.

Line-drying in sunlight! Works a treat!

I use reusable nappies and if they get stained, I hang them out to dry in the sunshine. The sun bleaches out the stains and the fresh air makes them soft and fresh.

You should never use biological washing powders, stain removers etc on baby’s clothes as it can cause skin irritation and rashes. Just wash the clothes in non biological washing powder, add some fabric conditioner and hang them to dry in the sunshine!
